For the winter season, RNW is re-introducing a mediumwave service for Dutch-speaking listeners, in particular truckers, in Western Europe. Transmissions will be from Orfordness in the UK on 1296 kHz, power 300 kW and beam 96 degrees. The use of 1296 kHz will, in fact, begin next Monday for the European Road Transport Show 2007. The Dutch government has invited parties interested in using one of the remaining unallocated regional FM and mediumwave frequencies in the Netherlands to register their proposals by 30 October. The plan is to use the same system of comparative applications that was used for the national licences in 2003. It is intended to begin the licensing process before the end of 2007.

There are 12 FM and four mediumwave frequencies available. The mediumwave details are:

Heinenoord 828 kHz 20 kW directional (day)/5 kW ND (night)
Almere 1224 kHz 40 kW directional (day)/20 kW ND (night)
Echt 1035 kHz 10 kW directional (day/night)
Amsterdam 1557 kHz 1 kW ND (day/night)

Readers able to receive the BBC’s regional TV services on satellite may be interested to know that the theme of this evening’s Inside Out programme from Birmingham (1830-1900 UTC) on BBC1 West Midlands is pirate radio. Reporter Satnam Rana follows Ofcom officer Mike Bothma as he tours Birmingham’s streets, tracking down the illegal broadcasts that he says can interfere with emergency calls and put lives at risk unnecessarily.
Satnam catches up with two pirate broadcasters to find out how they get their illegal broadcasts onto the airwaves and what drives them to do so.

The UK commercial broadcaster Big L, which uses a mediumwave transmitter in the Netherlands on 1395 kHz, has decided to introduce a programme in Dutch, which will be aired at on Mon-Fri at 0300-0400 UTC in the morning, when most Dutch people are still asleep. It appears that the programme is aimed at Dutch-speaking truckers in and around the Netherlands. According to the website mediumwave.info:
“Eric van Willegen told me that Big L 1395 AM will launch a new programme starting Monday the 1st of October 2007. The name of the programme is “Big L Goes Dutch”. It’s a mix of oldies, truckin’ songs and a few Dutch songs.”
At the time of posting this item, there is no mention of the programme on the Big L website, though it has been heavily promoted on air over the past few days.

New classic rock radio station to launch in Dublin

A new radio station will commence broadcasting to the Dublin area this weekend under a temporary licence from the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland, and will operate every Friday, Saturday and Sunday until 2 December. The Rock, based in Dun Laoghaire, will broadcast classic rock music aimed at the over-30s on 94.9 MHz FM and 1278 kHz AM.

On Saturday, 22 September Scotland’s only international radio service, Radio Six International, will attempt its most complicated – and riskiest outside broadcast. The LV18 is a former lightship which – under the care of the Pharos Trust – was first used for radio, with an added radio mast to support the mediumwave transmitting aerial, in 1999 and since then has played host to a variety of UK-licensed re-creations of former pirate stations, including Radio Northsea International, Radio Caroline, and Radio Mi Amigo, as well as recent broadcasts from Pirate BBC Essex.

Radio Six International will broadcast its weekly Saturday Sounds programme live from the ship on Saturday, with special features including an interview with Tony O’Neill from the Pharos trust, and an episode of The Barnacles, a comedy feature first created when the ship was being used for RNI.

The programme [0700-0800 UTC] will be broadcast live on 9290 kHz shortwave to Europe, the Near and Far East and Pacific regions, 945 kHz mediumwave to the Baltic states, 88.5 MHz FM Stereo for Tawa and Redwood in New Zealand, 100.5 MHz Digital in Riga, Latvia, and around the world online at www.radiosix.com.

Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Radio International and Arab Media GroupArab Media Group (AMG) have signed an agreement to launch Virgin Radio Dubai, a new English hit music station that will launch towards the end of this year. Virgin Radio Dubai will broadcast over Arabian Radio Network’s frequency from studios in Dubai. Arabian Radio Network is a subsidary of Arab Media GroupArab Media Group. The station will be run as a collaboration between Virgin and Arab Media Group, with Virgin providing a particular input into programming, marketing and promotions.

Sir Richard Branson, Chairman of the Virgin Group said: “I am thrilled to be launching Virgin Radio Dubai. AMG is a great partner to have and I am sure that, together, we’ll build the best station Dubai has ever heard. Amateur Radio`s the whole thing for the Family or the Individual. Plenty of us well- glutted listeners think of ourselves as the cat`s ass of the lucky fun crowd in the toss and catch world of electrons, and Lord knows, us Broadcasters think we walk home after work with Fire- engine red socks glued on from the factory, too, but there`s an even better game to play next to the railroad tracks with all the other cats. Amateur Radio. Looking at the bottom half of Shortwave for a moment, Stations come in about the same signal strength, anywhere between 1 1/2 miles away to 400 miles away, obviously, really strong if local groundwave, or if long, dropping off quickly until the next ionosphere`s bounce fills in weaker. This main first bounce is a covenient enough distance to drive to, at least in the USA if you want to meet your contacts. There are two main types of Shortwave Amateur Radioists, "DX Hounds" and "Ragchewers". DX Hounds tend to be the ones that are unmarried or have no children and the hobby tends to be that of making lots of long- distance, hence, "DX", brief contacts on the top half of Shortwave, feverishly and competitively, and Ragchewers normally have long worthwhile or extra worthwhile talks and roundtables with each other and to much glee, entertainment, and education to each other and Shortwave Listeners, whether, Family, or the Individual. In fact, looking at the FCC laws for commercial radio use at Broadcast Stations, (in transmitter to studio links, studio to transmitter links, and intercity relays), it is illegal for the Station Operators to make longer than necessary telephone contact on the commercial radio. While the front reason is to be conservative of the commercial radio resource, the real reason is because mad numbers of watchers and listeners would get or make receivers for these commercial frequencies and listen to the Station Operators Ragchew their armchair and other sage opinions and gaffs about the programs, on, and how they are made. This can, of course, often be more interesting and educational than the the actual programs, themselves. Likewise, amongst Amateur Radioists, those who make their own equipment and maintain them, often thinking of future owners, are "best of show". Morse Code, (CW), Operators, and Amplitude Modulation users are the poorest formally educated, poorest incomed, but most resourceful and self educated amongst the Amateur Radioists. I listened to this station during 2004 and 2005 where they were broadcasting not just weekends but during the weeks they broadcasted on 5815 khz transmissions ended 2005 and according to their site the future for WMR isonce again uncertain.

Stichting Norderney, the Dutch organisation set up to preserve the history of Radio Veronica’s years as an offshore broadcaster, has arranged a special broadcast on 31 August, the anniversary of the offshore station’s closure in 1974. The broadcast will be on 675 kHz by arrangement with Arrow Classic Rock. It starts at 0500 UTC with recordings of historic broadcasts, and there will be live programming between 1000 and 1500 UTC which will include an appearance by Robbie Dale, who worked for Radio Veronica for a time after the closure of Radio Caroline.

British pirate radio DJ’s unite in fight against gun crime

A remarkable event took place in London yesterday, when DJs from more than 20 pirate radio stations in the UK gathered together at the launch of the Don’t Trigger Campaign in South London, designed to take a stand against gun and knife crime. The rise in teenage killings and gang murders is a major source of concern in Britain, and it’s said that the communities worst affected are often the ones where the pirate radio stations are located. Some observers claim that the type of music transmitted by these stations encourages gun and knife crime.

Although the police have the power to detain and arrest those involved in illegal broadcasting, they have chosen instead to cooperate with the pirate stations involved in the campaign, realising that they are acting for the greater good. This is all the more remarkable as at least some of the UK’s 150 pirate stations are believed to be run by criminal gangs, that use them as a front to run drugs operations. Indeed, the police have even helped to create anti-gun-crime adverts especially for the pirate stations.

This august local radio bbc essex will return the week long event pirate bbc essex reliving the days of the offshore pirates they will be on the light vessel LV18, They did this in 2004 which was a success.

Arrow's two radio stations likely to be soldDutch commercial stations Arrow Classic Rock and Arrow Jazz FM are likely to be sold shortly. Current owner Willem van Kooten has told de Telegraaf that he is in discussions with several parties about buying the stations. However, nothing definite has been decided. It's possible that the two stations will be sold separately to different owners.

Arrow Classic Rock has commenced broadcasting across the Netherlands on the FM frequencies previously used by Caz! which Arrow recently acquired from SBS Broadcasting. On 675 kHz, a special loop is running, with old Rolling Stones tracks and frequent announcements telling listeners to retune to FM. Caz! is continuing on cable, Internet and satellite. Arrow boss Ad Ossendrijver is still considering the options for 675 kHz.

Contrary to what was widely reported yesterday, Radio 10 Gold and Juize FM are not part of the deal which saw RTL Nederland buy Radio 538 along with TV channel Tien. Radio 10 Gold and Juize FM are officially part of Talpa Radio International, not Talpa Radio Nederland. Talpa Radio International also owns Radio 100FM in Denmark, and - at least for now - remains in the hands of John de Mol.

US regulator might ease controls over foul language: In a 2-1 vote last week, a panel of the appeals court ruled that the FCC's policy was "arbitrary and capricious" in finding that Fox Broadcasting violated indecency rules in 2002 and 2003 when Cher and Nicole Richie used expletives during the Billboard Music Awards.

The court ruled narrowly that the FCC had failed to properly justify its policy.

The judges went on to question whether technological advances and the growth of cable TV, which is not subject to indecency standards, made the FCC's regulation of the public airwaves outdated. That broader critique set off alarms about the ruling's potential consequences.

"Overnight, the court called into question nearly 30 years of FCC precedents and regulations aimed at protecting children and families from obscene language and indecent programming during family hours," said Senator John D. Rockefeller IV.

David de Jong reports: Following the announcement of plans to launch the Virgin Radio brand in France, its launch in Italy has also been announced. Richard Branson’s Virgin Group has reached agreement with the Italian commercial radio group Finelco, which is owned mainly by Italian entrepreneur Alberto Hazan.

Finelco currently owns currently three national radio stations: Radio 105, Radio Monte Carlo and the newly acquired Play Radio. Also smaller FM stations like RMC2, 105Classics and Swiss versions of Radio Monte Carlo and Radio 105 are part of Finelco. Dozens of Web radiostations under the RMC- and Radio 105-brands are also part of Finelco, of which RCS Mediagroup (owner of the famous ‘Gazzetta dello Sport’ and ‘Corriere della Sera’) owns 34.6 % as Play Radio - which it previously fully owned - was integrated into Finelco in return for Finelco shares.

Play Radio, which was launched as recently as 5 October 2005 on the former Radio Italia Network (a dance radio station) frequencies, was mainly a music, information and entertainment station. However, it failed to attract a large audience and has insufficient advertising, although the station never participated in the national Italian survey of audio ratings (AudiRadio).

The launch of Virgin Radio in Italy has been planned since December 2006, when Sir Richard Branson and Alberto Hazan signed a letter of intent; during the last six months, Virgin and Finelco have been finalising the deal. In the next few weeks the programming details will be revealed, as well as the official launch date.

In the UK, Branson launched Virgin Radio on 30 april 1993 (originally only on AM) but sold it in 1997. It is currently owned by Scottish Media Group (SMG) which is planning to sell the station in order to focus on television. Virgin Radio UK currently is a mainly rock orientated station with the slogan ’The Music We Love’. Branson owns Virgin Radio stations in India and Thailand, and also owns the French radio station Ouï FM.

Radio Budapest to end all foreign language broadcasting

Reports over the last few days in DX Listening Digest (DXLD)

say that Radio Budapest is closing down its remaining foreign language broadcasts on shortwave by 30 June. As we previously reported, following the phasing out of the use of freelancers at the end of February, the Italian service closed immediately, and now the French service is reported to have made its final transmission on Friday 1 June. According to Kai Ludwig, quoting the German service, an official announcement is scheduled for 13 June.

The website of Radio Budapest is hopelessly out of date, and makes no reference to the cuts or closure. Indeed, the Italian service details are still there, last updated on 19 November 2004!

Dutch commercial station Radio 10 Gold has confirmed to David de Jong of DutchMedia that its mediumwave transmissions on 1008 kHz will cease by 30 June at the latest. Station spokesman Jan Willem te Gussinklo Ohmann said that the exact date has not yet been decided. He also confirmed that the power of the transmitter in Zeewolde (Flevoland) has been reduced “in preparation for the eventual closedown”. This affects mainly listeners in neighbouring countries. Te Gussinklo Ohmann also said that it’s still not known what is going to happen with the licence.

Latest reports from “reliable sources” close to Dutch commercial station Radio 10 Gold say that the mediumwave transmitter on 1008 kHz will be silenced by the end of this month. It has been operating on reduced power in recent weeks. References to 1008 kHz are gradually being removed from the website. There are also reports today that several of the remaining staff have received redundancy notices - though the DJ’s are not affected.

I could take you back and forwards.I could keep something on you and hear you again and again.You would have 2 sides so i can enjoy the finer sounds of life.But now it seems you will vanish forever and be a memory in our mists.
Hey don't cry folks I'm only talking about the audio cassette that currys the electrical retail store is to sell it last batch and by christmas the cassette will no longer be available.
I use to use them to records songs of the radio especially when i was young trying to records the top 40 number 1 song (saves buying it in the shops).I also as a radio fan of mw/sw pirates and shortwave radio jingles have recorded stuff and have kept.
But we say farewell and hello mp3 and what will be next to die out:

The Compact Disc as everyone will download songs on to their mp3 players.

UK broadcasting group GCap Media today announced that it has agreed to acquire the 18 AM Classic Gold radio stations owned by Classic Gold Digital for a cash consideration of £3.95 million. GCap Media plans to merge Classic Gold with Capital Gold to create a single classic hits network. GCap Media already sells all the airtime on the Classic Gold stations and provides back office support including studio space, technology and inventory control. Bringing the two networks together will reduce operating costs.

Ralph Bernard, Chief Executive of GCap Media, said: “Classic Gold is an integral part of our advertising proposition. Acquiring these stations will enable us to create a single classic hits network with the potential to become a fast-growing national brand as audiences increasingly migrate to digital platforms. We therefore welcome [communications regulator] Ofcom’s recent announcement that it is considering the conditions for a switch off date for AM, as this would greatly accelerate the uptake of DAB.”

The acquisition, which includes relevant DAB digital licences held by Classic Gold, is subject to Ofcom approval.

Traditional analogue radio stations could be facing extinction under proposals put forward by the communications regulator Ofcom.
It is suggesting a review of AM stations in 2009 and of FM services in 2012, or when digital use accounts for 50% of the total, whichever is sooner.
