Radio Sutch comeback may be delayed till 2006
Paul Billingham, who is working on a project to bring back the offshore station Radio Sutch from HM Fort Redsands in the Thames Estuary says that, for safety reasons, the project may be delayed until 2006. The plan is to operate with a Restricted Service Licence on mediumwave 1503 kHz at 0600-2400 UK time. On the station's Web site, Paul Billingam writes:

"I have joined a local group called Back to Basics Radio who have undertaken many RSL'S in the last few years from ships such as the LV18 and the Ross Revenge. The project will still need volunteers, as a one month broadcast from a fort eight miles from the Kent coast is a little different from most past RSL'S.

"Back To Basics Radio is a voluntary group of people from all sorts of backgrounds and not just from broadcasting. They operate the online music station Radio Starship and are planning many diverse broadcasts such as Short Wave and AM Broadcast trials.

"At present the Radio Sutch project is still in the planning stages. Until access is available to the forts there is not a great deal that can be done. Robin Adcroft at Project Redsands has said that access to the towers is anticipated for May this year. Once a toilet and washbasin have been fitted for health and safety reasons and an area cleared to host the gear then the Sutch RSL can commence.

"Due to the physical difficulties of boarding the towers during rough weather I may delay the Radio Sutch broadcast until the Spring 2006. The Radio Sutch broadcast has taken all my spare time over the last few months, but I don't want to be responsible for anyone who may become trapped on the towers by bad weather or worse still gets hurt boarding the towers or supply boat."
